Here Comes Everyone magazine is looking for submissions of poetry, fiction, articles and artwork. We encourage bold and/or striking interpretations upon the theme BRUTALITY.
For our Brutal Issue, we’re inviting writers worldwide to explore and challenge brutalism in terms of deeds, relationships, society, global conflict, architecture – and any other topics that you feel relate to ‘brutality’.
As always, we’re looking for interesting and unique interpretations of the theme. Share your stories and perspectives with us. Some thinking points to get you started:
Brutalist architecture: urban utopia or ugly modernism?- With viewers tuning in week after week to watch beloved characters be killed off/maimed, how many of our current TV shows could be considered brutal?
- Does Brutalist-inspired art appeal to you (bold, simple shapes/ repeating patterns/strong colours)?
- Police brutality: a symptom of sacrificing safety for security?
- War crimes: what’s (il)legal in martial law?
- Violence in nature – is it okay to kill for survival?
- Sink your teeth into the stories behind emotional brutality (e.g. manipulation, break-ups, bullying)…
- Why do governments/fundamentalists commit atrocities against their own people? (e.g. genocide, revocation of rights, extortion, classism/racism/religious prejudice/homophobia)
We don’t just want doom and gloom – if you’ve got work that explores brutality in a witty, tongue-in-cheek or other humorous way, send it in!
(Please, no torture porn; we’ll accept graphic depictions of a sexual/violent nature, as long as it’s relevant and necessary to the piece and refrains from being gratuitous.)
